Zeolite & Concrete

Zeolite also prevents alkali-silica reaction by decreasing the alkaline ion concentration in the pore solution in concrete via ion exchange, adsorption and pozzolanic reaction, therefore the formation of alkali silicate gel is eliminated and the interface is improved. Zeolite can be heat treated to form lightweight cement. When heated it loses moisture. When mixed into a cement mixture it rehydrates and releases air. The 'foam' or 'air-entrainment' increases strength and decreases weight. BRZ Zeolite can be used to replace fused silica in light weight cement. Zeocan Zeolite expands into a lightweight aggregate at temperatures between 1200 and 1400C. Its density is about 0.8 g/cm 3 and has up to 65% porosity. Light aggregate is commonly used in Japan and China. Zeolite building materials include strong lightweight aggregate for bricks, dimension stones, decorative wall panels, slabs, and pozzolanic cements & concrete.

Benefits of using Zeocan Zeolite as a Pozzolan

1) Increased compressive strength due to the porous crystalline structure and high surface area of the zeolite, the hydrated phases of lime pozzolan are enhanced and this increases the compressive strength of concrete. 2) Decreases alkali-silica expansion. BRZ Zeolilte allows the use of clinkers with more than 0.60% Na 2O. (Limit of ASTM description). 3) Power savings. The production of 1 kg of clinker requires 900 Kcal of energy. Ten tons of Zeocan Zeolite used as pozzolan saves about 1 ton of fuel. 4) Improved chemical resistance especially in salt water applications as it helps resist underwater corrosion. 5) Decrease instability caused by excess lime in set cement. Totally free of clay. Clay has no binding strength and detracts from the overall strength of the concrete. 6) A porous structure yielding less weight per cubic foot. Zeolite is significantly lighter than sand and provides a significant increase in bulk materials per ton, yet provides similar hardness and strength as sand. The porous nature of zeolite will hold moisture in the micro structure, thereby enhancing and facilitating a more rapid curing of the concrete. 7) Available in a variety of mesh sizes (unlike sand) thereby it spreads easier and provides a smoother concrete surface with no clumping. 8) Provides reduced weight for building structure design. 9) A cement mixture using zeolite combines lightweight and high/early strength, while possessing an adjustable density.
